Actually I think its the same reason that faggots play computer games released in the last year because they have 3.4 textured bitmapped polygons with z-buffering, despite the fact that they are all mediocre.

Re: Why do people care about special effects in films so much
i don't, actually it annoys the shit out of me when a building explodes every ten minutes, 12 car chasing scenes and all that.
The way they film an explosion oftenly, they put it like if it was a marvelous goal on a world cup, I bet some people use the slow motion option to review said explosion.

its probably the same reason people like expensive cars that look stupid, maybe someone should do a study that shows how shallow faux-aestheticism has replaced true beauty in almost all popular areas of society.

Re: Why do people care about special effects in films so much
I've noticed that certain film makers seem too wrapped up in special effects. The Matrix sequels (not the original) and the Star Wars prequels are obvious examples that spring to mind.
I don't know anybody who actually likes films because of their "impressive" special effects.

Re: Why do people care about special effects in films so much
warcraft 3 is a nice game, but tell me except for the grafx and the roleplaying elements, in what way is it better then for example warcraft 2 or any other rts from that period. I mean, ofcourse it has been tweaked a bit so it plays a bit more comfortably but it's not really revolutionary is it?
I am with Nodrog on this, games nowadays suck, and you know why? Because you, the consument, in general give priority to grafx and effects.

Noone would play warcraft 3 over populous 2 if it wasnt for the graphics.
Noone would play any FPS other than quakeworld if it wasnt for the graphics.

Re: Why do people care about special effects in films so much
4 races rather than 2, more playable due to greater levels of automation and the like (idle peon button, autocasting spells), more varied gameplay.
And you dismiss the roleplaying elements as equal to the graphics (which aren't all that pretty). Why is this?

In what way is populous 2 a good multiplayer real time strategy game?
If you had said Starcraft or TA, you may have had a point, but there are still improvements over Starcraft in WC3, and we play Starcraft and TA as well anyway.
As for the FPSs... Quakeworld is good but there are better things.

GTA is a perfect example of this phenomenon actually, since both GTA 3 and Vice City were terrible terrible games.

the point is there is no inovation, people follow existing concepts and try to improve it, mainly on the grafx/sound department, just to ensure bucks coming in. It sucks.

Being good, multiplayer, real-time and involving strategy are all fairly atomic concepts; I'm not sure how I could break them down and argue that populous 2 has them, other than asking you to play it.

That's like comparing chess to go because they're both played on a board with pieces.
(Well, actually it's the opposite comparison to that, same form different medium, but the point remains)

I'm referring to the common useage of Real Time Strategy, which is a game in the style of Dune 2.

oh I thought you were talking about games that were played in real time and involved strategy.
The whole dune 2/command and conquer genre is terrible, and people should just admit it was a horrible mistake and move on.

WC3 does innovate
- RPG elements
- the upkeep component of the economic structure
- shops/merc camps etc
- very creative unit design. properly differentiated races are unusual to start with, but contrast the unit design with, say, generals or rise of nations.

I don't enjoy trying to jump on several moving platforms while crap monsters spawn in between while the retarded 3D view randomly reacts on every touch of the joypad which makes you fall down 12 stories high to start that shit all over again. It wasn't that bad in m64 but it is in most 3D platformers.

The C&C's may be terrible (in fact, I'm pretty sure they are [except red alert 1*, which is 'ok']), but I'm not actually going to put an argument here because this is another one of your random dislikes.
*Generals not included because it's more like a mix between starcraft and TA than any C&C game.

The crash bandicoot series could have produced some of the best platform games ever made if they hadnt kept randomly adding 3D levels to cater to the "graphiks r good geforce geforce lol" denominator that probably all like the matrix too.

It's not like RPG elements in strategy games where never brought in before.
Upkeep components? explaination please.
Shops, pffffft so what.
Unit design etc etc
These are not really inovative are they? They are just improvements or already existing elements put in to make the game a bit more different then others.
