My brother and mother have an opinion about America
Both my brother and mother surprised me with their views on the world economy the other day.
We were having dinner and were talking about the new government here and how bad it goes with the economy. To my surprise they specificly blame the US for the current economic situation.
Now, the point is not that the US is to blame for anything, but that my brother and mother, both clueless about what is actually happening in the world (like me), explicitly blamed the US.
Is this common? Do people around you also blame the US for things gone bad? Or is my family an exception here?

There are people outside my store with big signs reading "Death to Amerikka" as I type this. They're burning flags.

the us had a weak economy in the last month, the netherlands do a lot of buiness with the usa. so you actually could blame economical problems on the usa.
(but then, you do more buiness with us, so tell them better blame germany)

It is certainly America and not socialism that is responsible for Europes economic woes.

I don't know about you but I live in a comfortable middle class home in a stable country with free education and decent job prospects for people willing to put in a modicum of work. Economic woes?

Oh, do be quiet. Hayek was spouting off this sort of emotional ideological argument regarding immediate collapse and doom half a century ago. Instead we had several decades of complete prosperity.
Try and base your predictions on reality and not on the predicted ideological inevitability of something, eh?

Apparently George W Bush named "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" as one of his favourite books.
I think he based his economic policy on it

It seemed unlikely to me that you'd think the destruction of a building 3 years ago has been sole reason for every economic problem in Amerika. What, did they have their whole economy based in levels 35-41?

The entire institution underlieing the country is to blame. Every single child, woman and man is responsible. It is a country rife with apathy and greed.

Nah the US is just everyone's whipping boy for people that cant take responsibilty for their own problems. It is a lot easier to look at the US and say "The man" is keeping us down. If I am not mistaken both the French and German heads of state got elected on this platform.

That pretty much sums up my argument right there. Folks that probably have never met an American in there life making snap judgements on an entire people. There are those that arent too thrilled with Bush here too you know. America is very diverse and you can find an opinion on just about anything here. So to lump all Americans as evil or a force of evil or just plain sucking shows the smallmindedness of people.

I quite agree. They elected the heads of state of France and Germany without any consideration of their domestic policy. As a matter of fact they have no domestic policy and civilisation has since broken down as wild apes run amok across the cities of Europe.

ok
i'm fed up of this blaming americans
to start my rant, i would like to inform you all that i'm british, have lived most of my life here, and have few connections to america, apart from the few charming americans i know on irc (hello andrea + co)
this is a country which has an economy which is, as you may well know, reasonably laissez faire, however, it is also one which has been through one of the more remarkable advances in the last 50 or so years. if a country decides to rely on the american economy and therefore has a problem, it's their own sodding fault, america is there for the good of americans, it is not a scapegoat for every lard-ass this side of yo momma.
it has some customs and the like that may seem weird
of course
it is one hell of a big country, britain has probably the same proportion of weirdos, people who would vote gareth gates as president, but because the country is smaller, this is less pronunced. In my expecience, americans are on the whole as normal as anyone, and i'm fed up of people blaming this country for their own and their contries failings

every country is hit by the usas economical problems, uk aswell. they just suck up our goods and dont have enough to offer to exchange for them.
that boubble will collapse sooner or later and hit the economies of the whole world, probably even worse than the economy of the us itself.

It's a bit rich to witter on about people making judgments mired in total ignorance of the subject in question when you do it yourself.
Did you actually even bother to read up on those two election campaigns in any detail? Thought not.

That's the whole sodding point... how many people in the Europe, the middle east or asia actually know an American? Not me... Who's the representative of America? Bush and his office, and there specifically the foreign policy... THAT is what the world sees. That and what the media feeds us.
And because that whole sodding foreign policy is fecked up, and America only displays arrogance and idiocy (movie stars running for governor? cmon!) towards the outside world, people start to hate the country and it's inhabitants.
Whenever I read or hear the word "America" or "USA" I already start to think " what did they come up with this time to make peoples lives sour".
Oh well...
