"Google spiders" are the searchbots for their search engine.
Imagine them to be an "automated browser" of some sort. They download a website and index its content (i.e. adding keywords to the database etc). If they find any links, they'll follow them and proceed with the indexing.

Once a page has been visited, it will be checked again every couple of days for any changes.
