The UK government asked the new Palestinian government for guarantees on the safety of their troops. The Palestinians were not prepared to give any such guarantees (im guessing there was a fair bit of chest thumpin and "You support the evil Zionist regime, we will not give you or promise you anything" , and as such the troops were ordered to pull out.
The Israelis knew they were going to go. Whether through an intricate spying network, or through being tipped off by the UK or US , they knew. And once they were gone, it was open season.
Its not like the Palestinians had anything like the firepower needed to drive off elite Israeli armored units, and as such, they did what they want, when they want, as usual.
Anyone surprised by this?
