I think there's an interesting possibility on the filter effect you suggested though. Coupled with some subconscious from being in a half sleep state, seeing things you normally wouldn't could spare hallucinations. The question is, what could create such an effect in a dark room?

I think we need a Government enquiry into the matter, starting with a large grant ^_^
