If you want multiplayer games, I'd probably say a Gamecube: the PS2 only has 2 controller ports, and in all too many games on the X-Box multiplayer, even offline multiplayer, is forced through XB Live.
The PS2 has by far the largest library (partially because it's the oldest), but the only thing it's really got that the other two haven't got is a pile of Japanese RPGs (FFX, Disgaia, that kind of thing).
I personally just don't think there's enough games on the X-Box worth buying, although that's with a PC.
Your PC crashing isn't really a problem, as buying a new, decent, PC would barely cost more than the initial price of the new round of consoles, although it is more for single player gaming in many ways.
