this is exile-iranian pro shah nonsense. Khomeini was the symbol of the revolution. noone knew before his violent coup détat in 1980 what his true face was. he was promising the iranian democracy and freedom from france. alot of iranian , islamic, liberal, secular you name it believed him. the non-urban in iran were just analphabetical peasonts and were most certainly not islamic fundementalists. they were simple people working on their fields.
the revoultion was widely supported by the middleclass and the students and the merchants.
the fleeing begun after khomeini showed his true face a couple of months after the revolution.
