Hard to believe there is any pretense of politics when you are essentially saying that winning pa is down to a popularity contest.
Butch3rs post about pre launch has been the best on the thread: he makes some nice points about how it influences behaviour. Forcing players to launch live would mean alliances would have to hit alliances at sociable times to launch a proper attack, and it would mean that the more dedicated players would get reward for putting the time in. The perverse effect of pre launch is that you sleep at a social hour, set your attack for 3am and profit. This means there is no incentive to do anything that provokes an attack on yourself, you take no risk and only enter wars which are hideously one sided.
At the moment the game rewards politics that involves being fairly restrained and just waiting for alliances to hate on the other guys for you to win when the decisive battles come. As I've said, it's all about winning a popularity contest. If you're happy with that, continue.
