DVD stands for Digitally Vaulted Data meaning that the data is written to the disk as secure raw code. Once on there it is not possible to copy to another disk like you could a video cassette and the reason DVD's tend to cost more if to reflect the work of the coder who has taken weeks to put the data onto each disk simply because you are unable to mass copy DVD disks.
