It's surely an evolutionary imperative to want to blend-in to whatever social group you're part of. I'm not sure anything new has been said here, it's millions of years of evolutionary pressure which we're still all influenced by but are at least aware of and can exploit (the psychology of branding and brand names is probably parallel to that of social conformity).
