It is, however, impractical, as it requires complete disinterest on behalf of the supervisor. Whilst it does remove some of the problems ("performance on the day"), those are things that tend to be isolated to individual exams. What if your supervisor dislikes you? That's three years ballsed up. Furthermore, different supervisors will look for different things, when you're dealing with hundreds or thousands of people it makes much more sense to have some sort of standardised test.
