HOWEVER:
I just phoned the Vodafone telesales line and explained the situation, and as I hoped, they were so desperate to get a new contract customer that they've agreed to give me a month's free line rental to cover the time til the O2 contract runs out. So I'll just place a quick call to O2 to get my PAC number (so I can transfer the phone number) and then I'm good to go.
