Well, of all the developments of the last hundred years or so air conditioning would be pretty far down the list. If we built our buildings properly we'd probably find it easier to keep them cool / warm when appropriate anyway.
I'd take the internet over air conditioning, although it's fair to assume a good proportion of the world's server rooms wouldn't operate at all without air con.
