While many people
are stuck in the same rut they were in 50 rounds ago (literally), there have been many attempts to play the game differently. All of those different ways of playing have been nerfed beyond viability 1 or 2 rounds after they were first used. Look at the top dister rankings for a hearty belly laugh:
last round there was exactly 1 dister with more than 100 dists in the top 200, and 0 in the top 100. That's up from
the round before, which had 0 in the top 400. Ha ha ha it's not really that funny.
Now, obviously people
can still distwhore. Just press the 'Build' button and never stop. You can focus on XP even if that causes your fleet to stay so small you'll drop ranks, and you can bank hack even if you can no longer find profitable targets. But in a competitive game, people will always gravitate towards the most effective strategies, even if those are not the most enjoyable. That's MMORPG 101. It is the designer's job to try to create as much overlap between effective and enjoyable strategies as possible. That's the 'game' in 'game design'. Even taking into account PA Team's very limited resources, they have failed miserably in this area.
