I don't think cheap food is necessarily much more unhealthy than expensive food. Some supermarket microwave dish will not really be that much different from the same dish made in a restaurant, healthwise (except they toss a little bit of salad on the plate).
I'd guess the problem is that people just eat(or drink) a bit more than they'd need because it tastes good, or they are bored or whatever. What I notice a lot are young people being normal weight and later when they get older and slow down a bit, they get more fat. I don't think they all suddenly started eating completely different and unhealthy food.
