Muscle grow when they're resting so yeah resting is important. A day rest depends on your schedule really. If you are doing for example legs and shoulders on monday, you could do chest and triceps on a tuesday. In this case, keeping an eye on your shoulders as heavy chest training do pound on them as well. As most beginners doing a full body workout in each session, it's indeed wise to rest a day at least in between.
