When a lot of businesses are still on Win 2k / IE6, for a game that really needs to be accessed 24hrs a day, supporting as many browsers as possible helps - its hardly like it takes a lot of effort...

Its VERY easy to get Transparent PNG's to work correctly in IE6 - a tiny bit of JS will do the job.
And I know that the game uses JS so for the portal to not require it wqould be a daft reason. :)

The problem will more than likely be that a lot of the templates need to be reverted back to the default (this won't effect styles placed on as images etc) - this is due to the masses of changes...

the xbox doesn't support any form of web browser - the biggest hurdle would be making an API to allow the xbox live arcade 'version' to interact with planets on the live web game.

Having a front splash won't affect SEO enough to be a worry, all the content will still be the same and the search engines will pick up on the portal being at a seperate URL.

As the title suggests, its converting from a PHP script to a PDF - not a normal office document. But yes, the OOo PDF exporter is good at normal office docs to PDF.

I've seen issues with installing WinXP onto a SATA controller.
If you have a working machine, you can try "slipstreaming" service pack 2 and producing a new bootable CD with SP2 pre installed....

Tried a diff version of Windows (I'm guessing your trying with XP there)
Other suggestion, try booting the machine from something like a Knoppix Linux LiveCD - see if it actually boots all the way...

As far as I remember, the DB was on one of Jolt's servers... (this is what i was told, i was never given any form of game server / db server access) so u can count that server out.

No, they don't.. broadcast traffic eats bandwidth and turns a switch based network into a hub based (i.e. everyone is copied the data which in most cases isn't needed)

btdownloadheadless.py (its in the linux installer somewhere, i just emerged it on gentoo)
use --max-upload to limit upload rate and --url to specify the url to the torrent file :)
