That's exactly what happened.

Many people simply used if (!$foo) cos then you'd test positive if $foo was false, empty, or not declared. A nice easy way of doing it. But now it returns an error...

I CAN get * to store the value. So I've actually done the regexp bit. What I CAN'T do is make it work on the whole file, running the operation as it goes.
