I'd enjoy that zero pounds and zero pence you got for your club captain and top goalscorer if I was you :(

i posted that 5 minutes after i got in from work. that time consisted of me reading Jakiri alerting me to it on MSN, me reading the BBC Sport article, and finding out the cup results.

Deffeh keeps insisting the Old Firm don't asset-strip the rest of the SPL. Aye right.

He was always going to leave, and Hibs were never going to get any money for him, so its not like youve lost anything.

I heard he was getting paid 900 pound a week at Hibs, which is pretty lol.

i thought hibs turned down a 400k offer for him in january. if so, they only pretty much have themselves to blame if hes left on a free. after all, its not as if this is out of the blue - hes said he wants to leave all year, and everyone knows how the bosman system works. seems like hibs problem, not celtics to me

also, hibs should probably pay celtic to take caldwell

£350. less than sam morrow. less than we were paying sam morrow when livvi were paying half his wages.

however, he turned down an offer of about £2kpw two years ago and turned down £3kpw last year - the board decided not to break the wage structure.

not that this was the right call, but it's a shame that the money won out. he won't be on five figures in glasgow and he won't be a first team regular, and he will be playing against the team he's supported. this can't be said for lokomotiv, PSV, kaiserslautern, or indeed any of the english clubs that would have taken him on (fulham, west brom, everton were all nosing around him and scott brown earlier in the season). it doesn't hurt that he left, it hurt where he left.

we'd have taken 400k from anyone outside glasgow. hell, we might have taken it from the yams.

Were PSV/everton etc actually after him though, or was it just rumours? I thought that only non-Scottish club that made a definite bid were the might giants of Cardiff.

I assume he'll be a first team regular at Celtic, its not like they're brimming with quality.

west brom, PSV, anderlecht sent scouts to watch him.kaiserslautern and loko made bids. fulham and everton sent scouts to ER but it's not clear who they were for (likely riordan, thompson or brown).

im still not getting the crux of your argument. you were offered money but turned it down because it was a glasgow club. now a glasgow club gets him for free. for about a year hes been saying "oh btw bye".

shock, horror, catastrophy

Your board is absoloutely woeful at recognising the true value of its players and either getting long term contracts or selling them with a few years of their contracts to go.

O'Connor is the best bit of business theyre ever done. But one good sale doesnt make up for the loss of key talent at easter road for the last decade.

oconnnor was undervalued. we took 1.6 because they offered it and the money for him was too good to get in the way of after he'd been an excellent and dedicated professional for us for years. if he'd played for everton or someone, though, it'd be closer to 5 mil. riordan, in the same situation, would have been about 4 mil.

ejohn, we aren't pissed that he's leaving on a free. we are pissed at a)the old firm for asset stripping the SPL and tapping players constantly, b) riordan for chasing the money and signing for the Sith, c)petrie and co for not breaking the wage structure, d)tom farmer for being a tight-fisted **** - more money than romanov, more money than whelan, more money than the rangers and celtic boards together - and he has done nothing in fifteen years except restructure our debts. ocean sodding finance could have done that. also, deeks had been publically saying he wants to re-sign for some time now. it's jim "money, money, give it to me" mcarthur that was the demon on his shoulder.

Youre speaking from the green and white heart, not the green and white head mate. The transfer fees for a player whos performed really well in the SPL isnt anything like the fees commanded for players who prove themselves at a higher level, which O'Connor just hasnt done.

Barry Ferguson, in his prime, was only £5m. The state of Scottish football, and the finances of certain clubs which have been totally mismanaged, specifically Hibs/Motherwell, mean they can only command fees which are slightly below market value for players.

Market value in Scotland and everywhere else is totally different. The Bosman era saw to that, and some of the parasitical agents in Scottish Football make a very good living persuading players to ditch their clubs in favour of a nice fat signing on fee elsewhere.

I had hoped the O'Connor cash would be used to keep the other talent youve got on 2 year or less deals. Time will tell if the Hibs board has learned its lessons from Murray/Caldwell/Riordan.

Alas, I doubt it.
