*envy*
I wish I would have had that idea :(
that guy made $990,000 + whatever he gets out of the auction for absolutly nothing. I don't even think he will have to pay much for traffic once this is over, who would visit that website more than once? The marketing value of this whole website is rather thin once its out of the media, |
Re: *envy*
A small GD competition for similarly abstract ideas should commence, with whomever makes the most money out of theirs in (for example) two months being named the winner.
|
Re: *envy*
that's quite a lot of money - he got $38k for the last one, so that's easily over a million.
The media coverage did make it... otherwise it'd be a silly looking site. But because the media went into it, everyone was willing to pay, as people would click the sites advertised.. someone said sales went up 30% in the months since they got on the site, and it more than paid for the money they paid as a one off. I don't think that anything else will be anywhere near as succesful though, it's lost the rarity value already. |
Re: *envy*
It was on the news this afternoon: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/w...re/4606726.stm

Re: *envy*
I dont get it. Why would you want to advertise on it?

Re: *envy*
but people dont click on advertising banners at the best of times really. Especially not something like this, an internet "niche" which is going to be populated by more advanced internet users.
The chances of someone clicking on a banner, the chances of it being yours, the chances of them then going on to buy your product.. surely must be beyond miniscule |
Re: *envy*
when i surf to the site, mozilla sais the document contains no data.
If this was a scam, it was a good one ^^ |
Re: *envy*
sites down at the moment.

ofc, in a few weeks the site will be forgotten. If it's not in the news I dont go and look at it. If I dont look at it, I dont click any banners, but still, while it lasted it was a cheap way of getting a few pagehits (well, at least cheaper than advertising on google or with banners noone is going to click anyway). |

You dont really _see_ anything but a mass of colours when you look at the screen. A quick glance, i see "rentclicks" and a bullseye target. "Free hosting" - great, from who? |

Re: *envy*
Apparently the guy with the million dollar website has faced extortion related DoS attacks recently because he didn't pay some (allegedly) Russian dudes off.

Re: *envy*
Its on the BBC News Website as well
As they can never prove where the email came from, theyve no way of catching the guy, although I would suspect theyll manage to sort out the DDOS attack within 48 hours at the ISP. Hey, any publicity is good publicity. |
