Forums
Can we extend the lifetime of forum threads?
It's hard to find a conversation to get involved in when everything gets hidden for inactivity so quickly. People show up, see nothing to respond to, leave immediately afterwards. Atm it's like trying to hide the fact that your nightclub is empty by not letting people inside. |

Re: Forums
It should be possible to change the default and that might make sense. Most of them seem to be set to one month or one year. More than a year might result in necromancy though.
If you want to change it for yourself there's a "Display Options" section at the bottom of each forum page, whether or not you're logged in. |
Re: Forums
User CP -> Edit Options -> Default Thread Age Cut Off.
(But changing the default wouldn't hurt either.) |
Re: Forums
There's still the problem of whether it's a good idea for users to "find a conversation to get involved in" that's already been quiet for over a month, or (depending on the current/new defaults) over a year.

Re: Forums
If you're worried people will be disappointed when their ancient thread necro doesn't result in responses, I think people are perfectly capable of seeing that a thread has been dead for a long time. I strongly suspect that all the 'people' in GD with registration dates after 2018 are actually bots.
If you think necroing threads is actively harmful, I don't see how. A zombie is better than a corpse. Nothing is more harmful than inactivity. (Sidenote, I don't think changing the default cut-off will have any impact.) |
Re: Forums
The vast majority of forums now default to one year or more
