2 hds in one ide channel

I have this 40 gb 5200 rpm (even while manual says it 'closely matches the fast 7200 rpm') hard disk, maxtor diamondmax.

I feel like adding an extra disk so I have a backup disk in case one breaks down.

I dropped my eye on a 80 GB 7200 rpm disk.

I'd of course then use my 80gb disk as primary, so I'd drop all my linux stuff onto that disk.

I'd use the second disk for backups, and since 40gb is a bit a lot for just backups, also a windows partition for the compatability and the now and then game I play.

Now, my question is if I stack those 2 hds into the same ide channel, will the 5200 rpm slow the 7200rpm down? Will it be a noticable peformance difference? Should I drop the 5200rpm disk in the ide channel for my dvd-drive?

If they're both UDMA100 (or 133) it *shouldn't* make a difference, you'll only notice a performance hit if you try copying from one drive to the other (because you're sharing the channel, clearly)

I haven't noticed a difference in my box and it's doing just that.

2 HDD's on the same channel will be faster than putting one with the DVD drive.

This am true.

Unless it's some form of UDMA100 DVD Drive... spinning at eight-hundred-million RPM...

that would be cool.

WITH GAMMA RAYS

that would be nasty.
