old people and stupid sayings - a tuesday morning rant

(as i wasn't at work yesterday morning)

how annoying are old people? seriously? the interrupt you, they believe in their divine right to go first in queue's and they vacilitate over everthing only one copy of a book in stock? they might want it... after you have spent 20 minutes finding it... but they might decide that that wasn't the book that they were thinking of when they asked you with some bloody vague instructions and ask you to get something different and then not want that either!

i swear to god, a politician bringing in some kind of logan's run legislation would get my vote without a doubt!

and stupid sayings... my first customer of the morning this morning said to me 'cheap at half the price' what? exceuse me? OF COURSE IT WOULD BE CHEAP AT HALF THE PRICE YOU GIBBERING IMBECIELE, NEARLY EVERYTHING WOULD for some reason that particular saying really irritates me, perhaps its the sheer inane-ness of it!

*deep breath* oh well, back to work, no doubt to be irritated some more for the rest of the day

What do they mean when they say "cheap at half the price" ? Is there any particular reason they use that saying?

ITT the word "vacilitate" is used.

It's supposed to be "cheap at twice the price", which actually makes sense.

That's expensive for half the price!

oh wai

Well cheap at half the price does make sense it's just utterly utterly bloody pointless.

Cheap at twice the price actually gets across what it's trying to say.

I'm having one of those I can't make sense mornings :(

I love old people though. Love them. In a love them to death kinda way.

And by that I mean actual death.

But one thing even worse than users, are sales and servicing people. Seriously. There's one of them, who calls EVERY BLOODY DAY to check up on bug status or inform me of another bug.
"Hey Johan, hows things going with the program for customer xxx? and what about bug yyy? Oh, and now I have you on the phone anyway, I found this new thing..."

That's the servicing side... Now the sales side:

"Johan, I promissed customer A we can make feature B. The system will be placed next week can you have it done by then?"

Or:

Me to sales person: "I'm working on this neat feature X"
... one week later ...
"Hey Johan, when will feature X be done? I told customer A and he's very interested"

I thought these things were all myths, but it's all true... "Never mention ANYTHING about features that aren't finished to sales people" is what they told me in the past.
Sadly that means I can't tell too much about what I'm making to my boss either ;)

If you ever get into an argument with one and it's clear to them that you're winning (unusual as denial is far more likely) they pull out the classic 'in my day we respected our elders'.

Go ahead, live in ignorance you crusty old cretins.

bah, the elderly.

My personal favourite was when one of my colleagues advised a customer "Give me a second , ill just be a minute"

Im not nearly pedantic enough to explain to her why what she said was stupid, but it amused me greately.

I do things like that :(

I never realised until university but then all the non locals started picking me, and other Welsh people up on it. We would apparently say things like "I will be there now" when we would mean 5 minutes or "be there now in 20 minutes" as well as loads similar to what your example.

Apparently some Welsh people say b'there
As in: "Have you seen the book?" "Yes, it's b'there"
This particular welshy could not bring herself to admit that it was - just possibly - non-standard english..
She's
