The end of Belgium?!

I never knew things were this bad; though i presume theres an degree of hyperbole in the reporting. Anyone from Belgium here? Why don't the dutch bits join dutchland and the french bits join the france? Why have two new countries?

Well, Brussels is bilingual and alot of the arrogant Wallonian parasites want to keep Flanders as theirs. That are the main obstacles at the moment, it seems. For a long time Flanders has been oppressed by democratic means, but thats about to change.

Filip Dewinter is my hero; i really hope he manages to split up Belgium and give the Walloons the finger.

That was the original plan, but they changed it because striving for independence sounds more realistic and appealing to the voters then trying to be part of some other country. Dutchies and Belgians also got quite a few prejudices about each other, so to some it seems unlikely that our people would fit together. And they obviously don't want to end up in the same situation as with the Walloons again.

It's likely this has popped up again because it's been 3 months and the Flemish and Walloons still haven't sorted out a coalition arrangement, but coalition arrangements often take around 3-4 months in continental europe, especially when you have one side that wants some publicity.

Belgium is already a confederal state - separate parliaments - and the Flemish and Walloon governments even undertake separate foreign policy at times, so I doubt if the majority would support a separation of Belgium - but I've never really looked at any stats and I don't know how much nationalism the average citizen has - and I doubt if either France or the Netherlands would take on new states, especially as I guess each region would want to keep their own parliament and the fact the French joke about the Walloon quite heavily at times and probably the same on the Dutch side, I don't know.

I wouldn't really care if they split Belgium up into three countries (with Brussels being separate I'd guess due to the EU situtation - but then what do you do about the small German minority, ask Germany if they want quite a few more citizens and maybe some more land but maybe not?) but it seems a little silly, pointless and fueled by comments like Alessio's. Can't we just all - get - along?

Oh and at least there's some irony: the country which works as the central organising point for the world's biggest trans-national accord detirmed to work together as opposed to against each other is situated in the one place where the opposite is often true.

well, not totally. Belgium also has a history of being an artificial geographical wall between many old enemies (mainly france/germany), wich later on made it look like a good neutral ground for such european facilities , but at the same time this artificial situation is also the cause of desire for seperatism.

that doesn't make it any less ironic, dude, but I welcome to artificiality point to this discussion with width and girth.

Moreover, when you can, you won't and you don't stop?

i wonder if they both split up, and neither want to be a part of the EU with the other... so the EU headquarters will be situated in two countries that are not a part of the EU

Not even the Belgians. This whole situation isn't really on alot of Belgian's minds. Life continues as it always has. Belgians never been very politically engaged (bar the extreme right activists).
This is also why Belgium won't be seperated, nobody cares enough to make it happen except for a small minority.

As for the problem between Flanders and Wallonia, most of the (intelligent) Flemish people realise it's not the Wallonians that are the problem but the Wallonian politicians. Ofcourse there's always some stupid extreme right hillbillies that will just reproduce the words of their political leader Filip De Winter, but luckely they're a small minority in Belgium. The only reason Filip De Winter's party gets so many votes is because they promise change and all they want in return is a vote which is a duty in Belgium instead of a right.

Also, apparently there was a vote in Dutchia about taking in Flanders, and 70% or more voted that they'd welcome the idea. While when they asked Flemish people if they wanted to become a part of Dutchia they only got around 40% or less (if I remember correctly) to vote in favor of the idea.

This topic doesn't really deserve an exclamation mark.

The Belgians are too dull to ever break up their country.
