What would you like to be remembered for?

I was just wondering if you could go down in history for any one act what would it be? Some great invention, curing cancer, conquering the world, etc...

I'm not totally sure what I would like to be remembered though being involved in some great new space discovery would be pretty cool.

Re: What would you like to be remembered for?

Just on a side note we were asked who are our heroes in class today.

I said my hero is black and Irish, I call him God, some refer to him as Paul McGrath. Muchos Banter, the lads got it, the girls didnt. As we went round the room people were in general rather boring.

I thought it couldn't get much worse until a girl said my hero is Nelson Mandella.

I burst out laughing and went "Your hero is a terrorist?"

It was a joke, some laughed, some didn't get it. She hates me.

I would quite like to cure all cancer. That won't happen, so being remembered for something like first man on mars would be pretty immense. That probably also won't happen but in the whole lottery of life, I am sure there is more chance that will happen than me curing cancer.

I'd like to be one of those teachers that people look back on 20/30/40 years later and go "wow he was one of my best teachers, he really influenced me" at a school reunion with their friends. That'd do for me.

This would be a good one, although probably not in the way its meant. Adding some intellectual honesty and competent management to, say, NASA would improve it no end.

I know you did that deliberately hoping someone would call you out on it so you could make some bizzare comment and feel intellectually superior for a few seconds but seriously.

To be remembered as someone who made a positive affect to the lives of the people that knew me and to be remembered with a smile..
As a legacy, that will do me fine.

I would like to be remembered as the guy who mapped human genome and, subsequently, exterminated stupidity from human species.

You're more likely to be remembered as someone who doesn't understand genetics.

I agree completly, that those are my chances
but,
as are you...

its quite ignorant to imply that you understand genetics.

And cognitive ability is confirmed to be tied to genetics.

He who does understand genetics fully, will be a single greatest man in the history of humankind.

In all due honesty, i just wanna be remembered by my kids (whenever those will be aquired) as a good father... nothing else is really important. I care little about the world and humanity, and even less about my own place in it.

everything else is egocentrical ambitions that will never get a move.

"curing cancer" or "being part of the space program" isn't very realistic.

We dont allways get remembered for what we wanted to be remembered for, Edward John Smith probably didnt want to be remembered forever for his part in history.

So you cure cancer, then 50 years down the road someone discovers that your cure is lethal for future generations, but your still memorable.

The person who 1st created DDT was a hero...

If only she were a slut, then I'd have a reason. But then again, sluts are probably the only women Yahwe is familiar with, so they must all be sluts in his eyes.

I understand that genetics is not the sole factor behind "stupidity" (even ignoring social and self-determination issues), and that there are no isolated genes for pretty much anything cognitive. Furthermore, you're a few years out of date for the mapping of the human genome thing.

I wouldn't classify that as lashing out, more along the lines of a poor attempt at a one line zinger.

Well, its not what i meant tho, they have the map but not quite sure how to use it... So many more discoveries to be done \o/ Genetics own.

And my thread on eradicating stupidity via genetics was a joke :p relax bro \o/ It makes some sence, admit it :p

Re: What would you like to be remembered for?

I'm not sure I'm particularly interested in general fame (either post or pre death). Receiving recognition for your work (/beauty/cock size) can be nice, but that's usually secondary to the thing itself.

Among the people who know me personally I'd like to be thought of as a reasonable sort of fellow who despite being a **** on ocassion, ultimately wasn't too bad. That's about it really.

I'd obviously quite like for my ideas / work to have influence / impact, but whether people actually knew my name or put my image on fridge magnets or whatever seems pretty irrelavent really.

Obviously while alive it'd be nice to be known as the world's greatest lover (if only so I could dispapoint legions of girls) but beyond that I'm not sure it matters.

(Besides, the real individualist only needs self-love to sustain him.)

Re: What would you like to be remembered for?

I've never seen a big reason to want to be remembered. Ofcourse I would expect my family and such to remember me and I hope it is good and inspires them to be good and better people. In part I would hope I left inspiration on others to be better also. But as a religious person I don't care about being 'remembered' just about living a good life that please God so that in the next life I will be happy and good etc.

Re: What would you like to be remembered for?

Like Dante said sort of, I just don't care except that it would be nice if people would be talking about my love making skills even after life.

Everytime when I visit GD and I see this topic title popping up I spend a moment of time thinking about it and everytime I really don't know for what I would like to be remembered for. I'm not too sure if that's because I just don't see it as something valuable or because I'm just an empty uncreative **** without ideas.

Re: What would you like to be remembered for?

I don't really like the question. It seems to imply that vanity is action's main motivator, that your contentment relies on the approval of others.

I would, of course, like to improve my social and technological environment, in a way that benefits me and anyone I care for (this includes more people than just my friends and family), but I'd like to believe that is out of benevolence rather than vanity. I'm unsure how vain I'll be when I'm a rotting corpse anyway.
