Re: donation whores

Donations have been going on like this forever. The gal won't be able to donate to him again and like Londo says rather now than at the end of the round. In this case though I don't know what the MH will have to say, they might try to argue that this was illegal due to the planets being signed up specifically for the purpose of support. I'm not saying they were, I'm simply playing devil's advocate.

The correct term is actually Paid Sexual Worker, please be mindful that these people have feelings as well. For some people this is the only way that they would have a chance to grow and be on top of anything in their life.

what they do with their planets really should be their business as long as it is between consenting adults.

It'll be interesting to see whether this guy ends up exiling into a "random" galaxy full (or half-full) of people who also follow this plan.

This is in no way the first planet to get a donation at the start of the round. It's just the most obvious. The rules are the same for everyone, you can get this amount donated to you aswell if you can manage to organise it.

Instead of hating on the player, maybe you should take a look at the rules that makes this possible. Late sign ups have been doing it for ages aswell, is that fair? I think the whole donation system needs to be reworked, possibly deleted all together.

If he wanted to exile, he would have done so before making the value jump. This move is purely to start a discussion about donations

Why?

[B5]Londo 21 Mar 2010 15:14

Re: donation whores

Exiling would be absolutely loopy, the motivation from his galm8s point of view is that his being a tough nut to crack will also make the gal tougher, to then leave is just absurd.

Why does everyone leap to the assumption its all about the planet's personal aggrandizement? when actually so much in this game is about the collective, be it gal or alliance.

eltsin 21 Mar 2010 15:16

Re: donation whores

Round 33 we donated around 2m value res hacked by our covopper and mined from our late starters to 3 different planets throughout the round. Some of these were given to planets that were top 100 value at the time.

So hardly anything new, apart from that it was done early in the round.

Well, if that's the plan it has a very obvious flaw. With all the rest of his galaxy mates having crippled their defence capability (assuming that's the actual result of the donations), this guy will be an excellent target for team-up attacks.

Let's see how it goes.

Re: donation whores

Londo pretty much summed it up. Some players noticed the maximum donation limit was 50 million and aimed to get it done asap. If the galaxy planets reset, they leave the galaxy.
They've sacrificed their planets and are relying on being Xans; the 1 Terran in no way can cover them.

The 1 Terran can also in no way get any large amounts of xp or anything more than minimum cap. He can't hit many more than the top 30-50 planets, if that. I think he's going to struggle to get roids whilst others stockpile them.

Whilst the MH have the final say, I'm actually interested to see if he finishes top 10 this round. I'm not sure he will.

Edit: Also, any attackers stealing his roids will get pretty high xp and so catch him up more quickly

Im not sure if thats true, at this stage people build their whole fleet size over again in a couple of days, the rest of the gal each really only took losses equivilent to getting roided or crashing fist day which happens to a lot of ppl so they are not far behind in order to thrust him well ahead.
However the more indignation is generated the less likely it is to prove beneficial overall if it proves to attract rather than ward off incs.

mz already asked you this once[edit: twice], but why? You aren't really putting forth any arguements to support what you are saying. I do agree it shouldn't be possible, but how is it an expliot? Last round an apprime gal had a friendly cov-opper exile in and leave all his resources in the gal fund, then they exiled him out again. In previous rounds ascendancy gals have used the system to move resources from Unification planets to Feudalism planets to gain value. And heck, nearly every late sign up has used this system as much as they could. Are these cases worse, the same or not as bad? I personally think the time has come to put the limits down to at least half of what they currently are, maybe even remove donations completely. No matter what restrictions you put on it, there will be people using it and others that are pissed off.

I wouldnt want to see donations gone completely: In the past when Ive been a GC I have often organised ingal def to prioritise the big guys and then give out donations to those that lost, usually not much but enough to make em feel the gal isnt all about a couple of ppl.

Re: donation whores

Donations were introduced to help late starters get up to speed or help people to rebuild after a big loss (hence the below average limitations)
If some planets want to save resources to give them later to smaller planets it's alright.
But that startup bonuses are massively donated to a planet just to put it on top with an outrageous advantage of 100k TER DE doesn't look right to me. Startup bonuses shouldn't be donated, only used by the planet... or donations forbiden until tick xxx. ATM it is too big an advantage early on for a single planet using what i consider support planets.

"Arguments in favor of the cheating view involve the spirit of the game and the potentially damaging effects of the exploit on the game's community"
That people register planets with the intention of giving away their startup bonuses to another prearranged player at the start of the game is to me against the spirit of this game and against the idea why donations were introduced in the first place. I'm not sure it hurts the community though as there is too little left of it to matter.

and yes MZ it's purely subjective, i'm giving my opinion based on my feelings... i'm not preaching gospel.

Mzyxptlk 21 Mar 2010 19:22

Re: donation whores

The spirit of the game is cooperation. This can be seen from the fact that planets cannot do well without the support of an alliance, without the support of a decent galaxy and without a reasonable network of friends. It can also be seen from the fact that alliance frequently work together, which has in fact now been formalised ingame as well, with the introduction of the NAP-system. Furthermore, as Zaejii said, donations have been used in the past to give late sign ups a boost up the rankings, as well as in other situations. PA is more a game of cooperation than it is a game of combat.

I do not believe rules should not have a "spirit". If you can't rigorously define what is not allowed, it should not be defined at all. But if we for a minute assume the support planet rules do have a "spirit", it's that people without tag or in tag X cannot dedicate a significant portion of their time and effort to the furthering of the goals of tag Y. The same can be said of galaxies. However, people are entirely allowed to support someone in their own tag. And again, the same goes for galaxies.

In this particular case, the people in 10:4 are all in the same alliance as well as (obviously) the same galaxy. Therefore, the "spirit" of the support planet rule has not been violated.

The people in 10:4 have said they're doing it to show that the donation system is broken. I disagree with this assessment. There are many effective and legitimate uses for it, for example the aforementioned boosting of late sign ups. I don't see this case as being particularly different from what has happened in the past, except maybe as far as effectiveness is concerned. I do not think this will do the guy they donated to much good. He'll have a big planet for a while, but he will be unable to cap many roids because of his value, which will stunt his growth, while his galaxy's growth is also stunted because they gave away all their value and won't be able to gain roids either. In a couple of weeks the guy they donated to will be just as big as he would have been if he had played normally, while his galaxy will be smaller than they would have been if they'd played normally. And I haven't even touched on how the guy they donated to will get through the coming night.

In order for this strategy to be called an "exploit", it has to have some tangible gain for the people that use it while harming those who do not. Based on the above reasoning, I fail to see how this strategy can be said to meet either of those criteria.

**** subjectivity.

The spirit of the game is co-operation but that does not mean nor imply that donations in order to gain an advantage over everyone else is allowed or should be allowed. There are obviously levels of co-operation which are not allowed such as the support rule.

Also, donations may of been used in the past to give late signups a boost but there is a huge difference between boosting a lower value/score new planet to catch up with the rest of the universe and boosting someone to be 2x the size of the #1 planet.

The donation rule spirit is to enable lower planets or new planets to be donated resources in order to catch up with the rest of the universe. It is therefore not in the spirit of the donation rules to donate someone to be 2x the size of the #2 planet.

He may only be able to get minimum cap on most (if not all) planets in the universe but he can now 3 fleet with 3 fleet decent fleets and he can hit the top planets with a very very strong possibility of landing all the time.

Having double the value of the #2 planet is not a tangible gain? even if its just a short term gain instead of longterm, it is still a gain which also harms other top planets who are now extremly easy targets and will continue to be easy targets while he maintains the lead. Those other top planets would of been able to get the required defence and/or use the upgrade bonus or stockpile bonus to stop some waves from landing on them but if this guy decides to attack its almost impossible to stop him at this point in the game.

If he decides to join an alliance attack and the galaxy decides to defend against the huge fleet, then isnt that diverting more galaxy fleets than would otherwise allowing other members to land?

Its clearly an exploit and the donation rule should be changed to avoid this situation from happening again.

You also appear to be forgetting that 7 other people basically ruined their own rounds to make this happen. 7 people that could've sent 21 fleets on the same galaxy that now only gets 3 fleets incoming.

It might also be worth mentioning at this point that he can't actually attack anyone right now, except for one guy in his own alliance.

I find it highly amusing to see some sort of discussion almost every round how a certain move is an exploit/not in the spirit of the game/against the rules (in cases where no rule exists).
Obviously, youŽve been tricked. BA managed to pull off a risky move, and now youŽre afraid he might succeed. However, he did use mechanics supplied by the game, completely within the rules. You may call this move lame, but not cheating.
I know for sure one example of donations that certainly was worse than this, greenhills (I think) getting donated to #1 end of round (by the gal fund, not crashers). IŽm also pretty sure the donation limits were cut after that round.

BlueArmy did not gain any advantage that wasnŽt possible to get for anyone else (which is pretty much the definition of "unfair advantage" iirc).
The opening post expresses your disgust about this move. Fair enough, you are, without doubt, entitled to your oppinion. However, if you think there "should be done something", you should actually back up your oppinion by understandable arguments above the level of your personal feelings.
mz pointed out flaws in the strategy, he pointed out why this probaqbly canŽt be called exploit. What did you do to back your point of view?

You could just have well ended your opening post with "flame away" - this thread is mostly trolling because youŽre pissed off, nothing more.
IŽll happily be proven wrong if you can actually find rational arguments on this matter.

This seems to be the argument everyone makes but they're completly different. One is donating to a lower value or new planet to become more competitive, not donating to a planet to make them double the value of the #2 planet.

I believe I've stated my position on the matter several times already.

Got any more questions I've already answered?

Fine. So they can either defend against his 3 fleets that cap 10% each or against 10 fleets that cap 25% each.

So you're saying people shouldnt defend against him in alliance attacks?

So he can cap with 3 fleets and get 10% roidgain from each fleet to 90+ roids a night? Yet you're also arguing that he cant cap that many roids?

I'm pretty sure I've said they were planning on continuing to play.
Yes but you also said they 'sacrificed' there round to donate to him, so they're obviously not playing for #1 so it didnt really matter to them.

Not really, its quiet clear to everyone that isnt Asc that its an exploit and not an intended use of the donation system.

If the cost outweighs the benefits, if, as in the example I used above, the choice is between letting him cap 90 roids or the rest of Ascendancy cap 750 roids, then yes, that's exactly what I'm saying.

How is this different from people defwhoring for, say, elviz?

Oh, it certainly wasn't an intended use of the donation system. There's a difference between undesirable and unintended, though. I have yet to see a convincing argument that this strategy harms the game in any significant way. We'll see how this develops over the next few nights, though.

It might also be worth mentioning at this point that he can't actually attack anyone right now, except for one guy in his own alliance.

are you even reading the entire thread, Light, or are you just arguing for the sake of arguing?
