A Guy Honks His Horn

and doesn't stop. It's not too obnoxious; our doors are closed, and it's down on the road at the bottom of the hill behind our house. When it starts obviously I notice it, but between not being too loud, our music, and talking, it gets easy to ignore. Traffic must be bad. It gets bad down there often.

2-3 minutes later. Guy is still on his damn horn. I'm sure the people down there are right pissed. But I still have no problem ignoring it most of the time.

Another five minutes, the horn stops. I wander out onto our back porch; there's some trees in the way, but I can see traffic moving, so that must be what happened. Walk back in, and sit down. Have a bite. Then my wife notices a big black cloud, and we walk back onto the porch. There's a big fire down on the road. Then there are a number of big Kabooms. Five or ten minutes later, firemen start putting out the fire, and then lazily start whacking away with axes. No ambulances about.

I'd like to have a point, but I'm not sure what direction to go.

Option A)
In retrospect, it seems obvious that almost never does anyone hold their horn down for 5 seconds, much less 5 minutes, and no one ever holds it down for even 10 seconds. If you do hear it, almost certainly someone is unconscious, or, more likely dead.

*************************************The More You Know....

Option B)
So, what does your car horn sound like? Mine is so sad. MEEP. Sounds like a cross between a clown nose and the Roadrunner. I feel like such a homofag if I ever honk at anyone. Mazda Protege '97 btw.

Mine's not bad for a small car - it's a proper airhorn so sounds like a horn, rather than the daft "buzz" noise you get from electric horns which I suspect is what your car has. Unfortunately it's not two-tone like all the nice big cars have to really let you know they're there.

Also, I suspect the horn was going constantly as an effect of a non-fatal crash if there were no ambulances about. It's fairly easy for the electrics to get screwed when bits of engine are flying around under the bonnet.

I do admit I've been a little overly positive about the whole proposition.

I drive a 2003 Peugeot 206 LX and the horn does sound totally wussy, especailly if it's on for more than a minute!

I got the car in July 2003, then in June 2004 I get a letter from Peugeot about a recall, problem with the electronics, I need to phone up and arrange to leave it with them for a day for them to sort it out. So, I make the appointment, it's a week away and I can still drive around in it happily in the mean time.

The day before it's due to go in I'm walking across the park to the car park and I hit the button on the key to open the car when the damn horn starts to sound. I push the open and close buttons, nothing it keeps sounding in a constant drone. I open the door and press the actual horn and it still doesn't stop, at this point the other people in the car park are giving me dirty looks and seem to think I'm jamming the horn down for no reason other than being an arsehole. :( Eventually after a few more presses it stops, leaving me thinking WTF? The car doesn't have an alarm of any description, so why the hell would pushing the open door button make the horn sound, and why has it been fine for a year and the issue only happens a week after I get a letter about an electrical issue?

Disgruntled coder building in a deliberate bug that triggers off of a date is my thought. Anyway, I wasn't amused.

I saw this thread and thought "I can't possibly think of anything intelligent to say on this topic." I was right but was pleased to see that I was not alone.

I don't think I've ever pressed the horn on my car, but it probably goes "meep"

My old driving instrutor set fire to his car (for reasons I won't go into :D). He was in the fire brigade etc, and so he and his mates took his car to a field, he set alight to it, they ran off to call the local fire brigade (they're not stupid enough to do it in their own local area :D) and he sat and watched it pretty much burn to pieces. Apparently, when a car is burning
a) it doesn't explode like the movies show it always does (surprise!)
b) the horn / etc generally randomly set off repeatedly as the electrics go - apparently it's a bit spooky.
But yeah I agree it was probably something like electronics mucking up on impact. The ambulances might not have been around because they might be further away? I assume if they're hacking the car to pieces, someone's in there, and they're not just bored etc (even if the person / people in there are obviously dead).
