so what does it do?

skiddy 23 Jun 2005 22:46

Re: AudioScrobbler

Essentially it simply sits there as a plugin, near enough not existing as it never shows itself. Whenever you play a song, it just uploads the details to your profile - track title, artist, etc.

Builds up a most listened to list, gives you recommendations based on what you play compared to others and accounts for everything in a global database so you can see how many other people listen to the same types of music as you.

It's rather ace.

Does it only work with MP3s? What if I accidentally open porn in Winamp? :(

Re: AudioScrobbler

a lot of my mp3's aren't tagged correctly...
and I have a random playlist where I just skip through songs until i get one I want to hear...
Will this affect it?

skiddy 23 Jun 2005 22:52

Re: AudioScrobbler

I've no idea. Try it!

I'd assume it's clever enough only to work with audio, but as far as I can tell the plugins are format independent as far as encoding goes - it just checks the 'now playing' data and uploads that.

According to the FAQ for my iTunes plugin, it doesn't care what's playing and in what order, it just checks the 'now playing' and uploads that, so random playlists shouldn't affect it - assuming the plugins all work in a relatively similar manner.

The tagging will cause you issues though, as it uploads the tags

I spent four hours on Saturday tagging all my iTunes tracks correctly after bringing them in from WMP - now my iPod is easy to navigate though.

And stop asking me questions, I only found the damn site half an hour ago!

Well, I'm in but when the RIAA come round and kill me I'm blaming you Skiddy.

skiddy 23 Jun 2005 22:57

Re: AudioScrobbler

One cool thing is though, if you click the song in your recently played list on your profile, or on anyone elses profile, it takes you to a page which gives you total number of people who've also listened to that track, similar artists and other songs by that artist.

I suppose it's kinda a cross between that cool Java music map thing and the GD Music Archive - but sorta dynamic.

They've no reason to, it's not uploading the music and playing it in MP3 format is no basis to believe it's ripped off :(

Although my Dad said the same thing as you, obviously replacing 'skiddy' with 'stu'.

Re: AudioScrobbler

it seems quite good for finding the most popular song by a particular band, along with related artists.
I just downloaded some "fall out boy" mp3's because they are apparently quite close to Brand New and could see from the list which tracks are most popular.

(a cubass track just came on, heh I wonder what the site will do!)

EDIT
Track Stats
12 people have listened to songs by cubass

either it's slow updating, or the foobar plugin ain't doing its job.. it's loaded and all, but nothing's appearing on the site.

Re: AudioScrobbler

Same happened here hyfe, don't worry though, it does update eventually. After the first update (when it tries to update your profile with the players history - big update, failed for me ) it goes quite quickly.

I read that they'd had a couple of problems on the news page.

Judging by your stats, you've been around there for a while.

Nice one. You just offered to be GD's question answerer.

Well volunteered.

oh

me not noticing the 'audoscrobbler' tab in the options and hence me never giving it my username and supersecret password might be the reason nothing was happening.. that and the 'enable' checkbox which was fairly blatantly unchecked.

Not that enabling it helped though

I make the group 10. Now we get weekly `listned-to` charts which is very cool.
I've got 7000 tracks on this thing now. I really like it.
You can find people with similar tastes as you and find out about new artists.
You also get a `You like all this shit, maybe you'll like this shit` type ability.

You've also got an account at www.last.fm now as well.
You can listen to 30 second samples of most albums there.

Signed up, but I'm at work and his old thing cant cope with music, so it will have to wait til one of the rare occasions I get to play my music at home. Then it can really mess up the list by adding all my cheesey pop :)

It's a quick way to upload your whole playlist... it won't work of course as jerome has explained.

Well I get why he'd do it, but surely it's supposed to be about what songs you listen to, not what songs you have? I have thousands of songs, but it's more telling which songs I actually listen to.

50% or 240 seconds worth, whichever comes first.

Not trying to big myself here, I just read it last night so it's fresh in my mind.

Ah, this is very good news.

This means that if the horrible stuff comes on that even I don't want to listen to right now, I can move to the next track, and it won't be recorded. Muaahahhahaahhaa, or something.

I'm willing to bet you're one of those kids who was never really good at anything at school.

Either that, or your brothers/sisters were consistently better than you at things.

You're so competitive at things that aren't supposed to be competitions.

The reputation thing - you swap reputation with people. It completely defeats the point of it, just swapping for the hell of it. You're supposed to give people feedback on good/bad posts, not just try to rack up your "score".

The keystroke thing. I can't remember what you did, but as Dante mentioned, you treated that as some sort of silly competition.

Now this. It's not a competition of "who has the most songs". I have plenty of songs. Recently, I've just been listening to Cream (Clapton etc). So my AudioScrobbler contains most of that, as I go through phases of listening to different artists. I'm not going to try to prove something to people by showing my entire playlist.

Get the point please :(

Let's say I get in the mood to download a load of crappy 80's songs, or for a week or two I like a certain artist's album, but then grow weary of it. Now of course I could go into my big folder of mp3's and delete all the offending items, or move them into specific folders, but that requires effort. More effort than Ctrl+Alt+PgDn, at least.

Also, I need to spread the love around before giving it to TomKat again, it appears.

Theres plenty of reasons why this could be true. Maybe like me Leshy has a shared mp3 collection (in my case any mp3 anyone in the house has is on a seperate server) or sometimes you rip an albums but you only like a couple of tracks or the same with downloading them
