I have been a fan of Pratchett for over about fifteen years now, but why would I want him to get a knighthood? Is it something he has badly expressed a desire for? (It may well be - I've not very checked).

While I wouldn't expect an author to strictly follow the views of one of his characters written in a fantasy novel, I'd be surprised if Pratchett was a big fan of the honours system and the things go with it. What was it Vimes said about the monarchy and honest men bowing and scraping, etc?

The first random five books of his you read are funny, after that they become formulaic. TBH hes becoming the author equivalant of high-concept :(

This isnt something hes's asked for Dante, its something someone has decided to nominate him for.

But the nominations not enough, it needs his fans support.

Thats a fair comment Milo, thats your opinion, we cant all like the same thing, but yoou cant call a series of books formualaic and make it an insult because it is a series and therefore going to become a bit samey after a while, just as harry potter and anne mc'caffreys pern, even the james bond series and any other set of books that have been set in the same world, with the same characters will be.

According to wikipedia (hey I'm too stupid to look up other sources) a knight is just a higher rank than those with CBEs and the like: members of The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. I wouldn't support it for that reason - the social implications of perpetuating an unrealistic perception of our real and expected power and nation-state subjugation in general. Pratchett could accept it as it would make him anti-establishment but also part of it though. He'd get to live out Vimes's social dilemma.

Read the science fiction works of Iain M Banks for a quick counterexample off the top of my head.

I'd like to think that after all hes written parodying the establishment and worthless titles, he would have the grace to turn it down if he were offered.

If you like his writing, petition to get him a real prize (ie something awarded for literature) - the Queen/British government are hardly the people you should be looking for to judge the merit of his work.

Terry Pratchett gets nominated for booker prize - now that would would be interesting concidering what normally gets nominated, and i'm fairly sure you have to be a 1st time published author.

No it isn't. To take the most recent example, Kiran Desai, her work which won in 2006 was her second novel, and her first had been critically acclaimed and won the Betty Trask Award. To take the 2005 winner, John Banville, he had published seventeen novels, won five awards and been short-listed for the Booker Prize previously before actually winning it. In response to your first question of who was the last established author to get nominated for a booker I don't even have to go back further than one year, Sarah Waters was nominated in 2006.

Maybe by established you mean people who sell 5 million copies of their book or something but to be honest the day Tom Clancy gets nominated for a Booker prize is the day I give up on literature altogether.

Why do you even care who is nominated?

Hi, you haven't met me but I'm ridiculously pretentious.

Largely because it'd signify an appalling downturn in what relatively respectable people consider good literature. If I was told a dozen people somewhere random in the US decided to change their minds from drugs should be decriminalised to burn all drug users I wouldn't care too much but if a dozen people from here did it I'd be fairly dismayed.

I don't think a judging panel selected from the bourgeois media and changes each year can properly be compared to the combined wit and wisdom that is GD.

Pratchett deserves a proper literature prize infinitely more than the 'lol this is a tragic tale about a poor family from africa!!!" dross you often have winning such things.

Sarah Waters
Quote:

Tipping the Velvet is a 1998 Victorian lesbian novel written by Sarah Waters. It was her debut novel.

It tells the story of Nancy Astley, an oyster girl from the English town of Whitstable, who falls in love with a male impersonator and stage performer named Kitty Butler. The book, like the rest of Waters' novels, has a strong lesbian theme, though Tipping the Velvet in particular deals very candidly with the topic of lesbian sex and desire along with the role that economic class can play in oppression. The title is a Victorian-era euphemism for cunnilingus
Without even bothering to read it, this is precisely the sort of politically-motivated 'real-life' crap that is fairly representative of what 'respectable people' considered good literature towards the latter half of the 20th century. It's not like we're in a position where we can decline much further.

It's okay guys. When they hit rock bottom it'll be the perfect opportunity for the People's Republic of General Discussions to organise the division of labour, to ameliorate everyone's thought patterns.
