Hooray!

As of March I am a law student (well I start then, I already know I got it).

I will also study arts, but my law degree will elevate me above the snooty engineering students.

Hooray!

How many exams you got compared to me?
How many hours a week do you have compared to me?

Arts student wins.

5 exams.
10 hours a week lectures.
But anyway I was comparing Engineers to Lawyers.

But while we're on the subject:
How much coursework do you have to do?
How many jobs are there for you to walk into when you finish?

More than Law students? The only people I know who have more work than Law students are Medics.

Most of the law students I know seem to have around 12 hours a week of lectures and tutorials, I have 25 studying Economics and Accounting while the engineering ones have 28-30. They also seem to have more coursework but just as many exams.

I assumed it was one of those crazy American degrees where you study multi-variable calculus and Mesopotamian pottery (hassuna peroid) in order to make yourself into a more competant musician.

On average, 3 exams per semester, 10-12 formal teaching hours, including tutorials and lectures. (how many 'lab' hours a week do you have to do?)
Coursework is usally worth 25% and consists of approx. 1 2500 word essay.

As for jobs, average salaries for eocnomic graduates are only beaten by lawyers and medics, with maths close behind. It's generaly considered because we can do both 'Arts' (discussion) and 'Science' (one right answer) we're very employable.

I've lived with medics, I've got friends who are medics.
I don't thik they work too hard, at least not in the 1st few years. Maybe by 4th year when they're traveling around and working most of the day somewhere and come back and are meant to reading about it, they do more, but thats hardly comparable to undergrads. I know a few law students, well I did, most graduated last year, but I'm not really sure how hard they work, although looking at the type of people they are, I expect it to be a lot.

Not too much. This year and last we have big projects but we can spend as much time on it as we deem necessary.
I've found that throughout the years I've had more lectures (and labs i guess) than other students but nearly no work to do outside of that. Which suits me perfectly.

Re: Hooray!

maybe hes doin an open university degree or an internet degree. I study both Law and Politics, I can honestly say that Law drives me up the wall, not many exams or coursework but what you have to do is precise, politics i can ramble on and on. But saying that law isnt too difficult if you do the reading and prepare your work.

What's the point of arguing how many lectures you have? It doesn't make any degree more credible than another.

Summanus 19 Jan 2005 22:50

Re: Hooray!

Actually it's a Combined Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Laws. The Arts bit will be mostly politics, but really it's just something interesting to study, whereas Law will be a bit dry in parts.
